What is the difference between HomePlug 1.0 and HomePlug AV?

Any product that carries the HomePlug logo is compatible with another HomePlug device at the same speed.  There are two types of HomePlug.

HomePlug 1.0
HomePlug 1.0, is the first generation that the HomePlug Alliance approved and this provides performance comparable to the original 802.11b Wi-Fi.

This is suitable for extending your network, for creating a home network to share media files (but not High-definition).

HomePlug AV
HomePlug AV, the second generation, is designed for delivering High-Definition television and video over existing electrical wiring.  High-definition video is the most challenging application for networking.

To transmit high definition requires data rates upwards of 20 Mbps per channel, sufficient range to cover the entire house.  You also will require the Quality of Service (QOS) to ensure that the video gets from one place to another without interference from other applications so you don’t have time delays from what you want to watch and what you see on your TV.
