Both the PowerLine HomePlug AV PLA400 and PLA401 versions provide the same performance, offering speeds up to 200Mbps. However, the PowerLine Homeplug PLA400 desktop version is an ideal choice if:
1) You find PowerLine HomePlug wall-plug adapters inconvenient due to their size
2) You want to be able to have the status lights visible for monitoring and trouble shooting purposes
While the PowerLine HomePlug PLA401 is the ideal choice if you want to have subtle low profile PowerLine Networking, in some cases they are placed in plug sockets which might be behind a desk or sofa making it hard to see the status lights and therefore monitor the network.
